09.04.10 – “you were right”, by built to spill

Today’s song is the first Built to Spill song I ever heard that made me think “Oh wow, these guys are good.” Since then, I have become a fan of their entire collection, and have been able to see them live (though not as many times as I might like). If you like Built to Spill but haven’t seen them live, I would highly recommend it, as they put on an amazing show that combines the tightness of their studio album sound with some amazing jams in between verses for an extra bonus.

“You Were Right,” while a great song in its own right, became my favorite Built to Spill song when my friend pointed that each line in the song is itself a reference to a lyric from another song:

“You Were Right,” Built to Spill

You were wrong when you said
Everything’s gonna be alright
You were wrong when you said
Everything’s gonna be alright

You were right when you said
All that glitters isn’t gold
You were right when you said
All we are is dust in the wind
You were right when you said
We are all just bricks in the wall
And when you said manic depression’s a frustrating mess

You were wrong when you said
Everything’s gonna be alright
You were wrong when you said
Everything’s gonna be alright

You were right when you said
You can’t always get what you want
You were right when you said
It’s a hard rain’s gonna fall
You were right when you said
We’re still running against the wind
And life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone
You were right when you said
This is the end

Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?
Do you ever think about it?
